What we collect
Bar Crawl Golf does not require an account. When you create or join a crawl we store only what's needed to run the game:
- The display name and optional caddie name you type into the lobby
- The character avatar and color you pick
- Scores you tap during the crawl (sips per hole, penalties)
- Chat messages you send to your group (text + photos you choose to attach)
- The 6-character game code that ties your data to a single crawl
What we do NOT collect
- Your real name, email, phone, or any contact information
- Your precise GPS location. Location is used two ways, both optional and only after you grant permission: the “Sort by Near Me” toggle in the Crawl Library sorts on-device and those coordinates never leave your phone; and the “Use my location” weather button on the home screen sends your approximate coordinates to two services. Open-Meteo returns the local forecast, and OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim turns those coordinates into a nearby place name (“reverse geocoding”) so the planner can prefill your town. We never store or sell your location, and you can skip both and still use the app
- Advertising IDs (IDFA) or any cross-app tracking data
- Photos from your library beyond ones you explicitly attach to chat
- Contacts, calendar entries, microphone audio, or health data
Diagnostics & crash reporting
The app sends crash reports and a small set of usage events (app opens, screen views) to Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Analytics (iOS), and product-analytics events that map the funnel (a crawl is created, a round starts, a hole is logged, a round finishes) to PostHog (web and app), so we can fix bugs and understand which features get used. These reports contain device model, OS version, app version, a randomly-generated install ID, and stack traces for crashes. They do not include your display name, chat messages, photos, game codes, or any other game content. The web version respects the cookie banner: declining suppresses analytics. No advertising IDs are collected and no third-party ad SDKs are linked into the binary.
Where the data lives
Game data is stored in Supabase (a hosted Postgres database) scoped to a single 6-character game code. There is no cross-game user account, so your activity in one crawl is not linked to any other crawl. Data is retained while the game is active. You can request deletion of any game's data by emailing the support address below with the 6-character code.
Data export: you may request a copy of your data (chat messages, scores, photos) tied to any 6-character game code by emailing the support address with the code. We respond within 7 business days. Published Crawl Library entries you authored can be removed by emailing your device fingerprint (visible to BCG support if you reach out) and the slug of the crawl you'd like deleted.
Game code visibility. Important
The 6-character game code is your only access control. Anyone who has the code can see all chat messages, photos, scores, and player names for that game. Treat it like a private link: only share it with the people you want in the crawl. Codes are randomly generated from a ~1 billion-combo alphabet, so guessing one is impractical, but a code that leaks (a screenshot, a forwarded text) hands full access to whoever receives it. There is no "kick" or "rotate code" feature in v1.0. If a code leaks, ask the host to start a new game.
Shareable postcards & player names
When a round finishes you (or anyone in the crawl) can generate a painted “postcard” image to share to Stories, iMessage, or save to your camera roll. That image embeds the finishing players’ display names and scores, and the image endpoint is reachable by anyone who has the share link. We never log your real name, email, or contact info on these cards. Only the display name you typed in the lobby. The endpoints are markednoindex so search engines don't archive them, are rate-limited per device and per network address to blunt mass scraping, and are read-only (they cannot change your game data). Use a nickname instead of your legal name if you'd rather your real identity not appear on a shared card.
Notifications (on-device)
Bar Crawl Golf ships on-device local notifications only. If you grant notification permission, the app can schedule a gentle reminder when your group advances to the next bar or a round wraps up. These are scheduled and fired on your phone. There is no remote push server and no notification token ever leaves your device. We never send marketing or promotional notifications, and you can turn every reminder off in Settings.
Third-party services
- Supabase. Game data + realtime sync
- Vercel. Hosts the web app and the AI Planner API
- DeepSeek. Generates AI bar crawl suggestions (only the prompt + city you type goes to them, no personal data)
- Google Maps. Renders the route map (only the bar addresses; no personal data)
- Open-Meteo. Local weather forecast for the “Use my location” button (only your approximate coordinates; no personal data)
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Reverse-geocodes your approximate coordinates into a nearby place name for the “Use my location” button (no personal data)
- PostHog (web + app). Product-analytics events (funnel steps, page and screen views). No display names, chat, photos, or game codes. See “Diagnostics & crash reporting” above.
- Firebase Crashlytics + Analytics (iOS only). Crash reports + anonymous usage events. See “Diagnostics & crash reporting” above for exactly what is and isn't shared.
Age restriction & responsible use
Bar Crawl Golf is rated 18+ on the App Store (Apple's highest age tier) and is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their country of residence. In the United States that is 21+; in most of Canada, Europe, and the UK that is 18+. By using this app you confirm you meet the legal drinking age in your jurisdiction.
We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under the legal drinking age. If you believe a minor has used this app, contact the support email below and we will purge the associated game data.
Play responsibly. What this app is, and isn't
Bar Crawl Golf is a scoring tracker, not an encourager. The whole game incentivizes drinking less: lowest sip count wins, “Designated Driver” (zero-sip rounds) is celebrated as a hero achievement, and individual-hole sip totals are hard-capped. We don't reward heavy consumption. We reward restraint.
Built-in safeguards we ship with every round:
- Hard 18+ age gate at first launch (locale-aware: 21+ in US, 18+ in most of EU/UK/CA), fail-closed if declined.
- Per-hole sip caps enforced server-side. No “chug as much as possible.”
- Hydration reminder fires mid-round nudging players to drink water.
- “Get a Ride Home” button surfaces at round-end with a one-tap deep link to Uber / Lyft.
- “Designated Driver” achievement tracked separately and shown in the Hall of Fame as the “Saint of the Crew.”
- Score editing any time during the round. If a player needs to slow down, the host can pause / wipe holes.
Drink responsibly. Bar Crawl Golf is a scoring tool. It is not a coach, a sober ride, or a replacement for your own judgment. Pace yourself, drink water, never drink and drive, and listen to your friends if they say it's time to slow down. If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol, the SAMHSA National Helpline is 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Confidential, 24/7, free.
